# Python Basics

Duration ~90 min · Session Day 0, at home

In the course, we will be using Python for scripting image analysis workflows. In order to make sure that students are familiar with the basics of Python, we provide this section as a self-paced introduction to the language. Please go through this notebook and the exercises before the first session of the course. While it is not a general Python course, it will cover the essential elements of Python that will be used in the course.

```{note}
Python is a general-purpose programming language that is widely used in scientific computing. It is known for its readability and simplicity, making it a great choice for beginners. In this course, we will use Python in combination with *Jupyter notebooks*. These are interactive documents that allow you to write and execute code, visualize data, and document your analysis in a single file.
```

The notebook below introduces and demonstrates Python basics. Its "cells" contain code that can be executed, and the output will be displayed directly below the cell. Feel free to modify the code and experiment with it. The exercises will help you to practice and solidify your understanding of the concepts covered in the notebook.

This notebook can be run directly in your browser, without any installation needed. It may take a moment to start.
